Extracts from the book SHANTARAM by David Gregory Roberts

1. One of the reasons why we crave love, and seek it so desperately, is that love is the only cure for lonliness, shame and sorrow. But some feelings sink so deep into the heart that only lonliness can help you find them again. Some truths about yourself are so painful that only shame can help you live with them. And some things are just so sad that only your soul can do the crying for you.

2. Some loves are like that. Most lovers are like that, from what I can see. Your heart starts to feel like an overcrowded life boat. You throw your pride out to keep it afloat, and your self-respect and your independence. After a while you start throwing people out - your friends, everyone, you used to know. And it's still not enough. The life boat is still sinking, and you know its going to take you down with it........I think that's why I'm so sick of love.

3. A dream is a place where a wish and a fear meet. When the wish and the fear are exactly the same, we call the dream a nightmare.

4. It's a fact of life on the run that you often love more people than you trust. For people in the safe world, of course, exactly the opposite is true.

5. When you judge the power in a person, you must judge their capacities as both friend and as enemy.

6. The real trick in life is to want nothing and succeed in getting it.

7. Sometimes you have to surrender before you win.

8. The worst thing about corruption as a system of governance is that it works so well.

9. Redemption's climb is the steepest if the good that wee did is soiled with secret shame.
